Hit Writers Round with Jay Gavin, Hawkshaw Hawkins Jr. & Billy Don Burns- 5.31.24
Jay Gavin
Jay Gavin grew up in a tiny close-knit Canadian fishing village on Prince Edward Island where the potato fields are lined by red dirt roads, there isn’t a stop light for 100 miles and the kitchen parties go on for days. After years touring North America and recording as a bassist with punk & metal bands like Spawner Record’s Huskavarna, and Texas thrash legends Speedealer, Jay came full circle and returned to his roots in country.
Jay writes and sings songs for fans of real county music and is often compared to artists like Jerry Jeff Walker, Robert Earl Keen and John Prine. Jay's on tour in 2024 promoting his latest album Road Ready produced by five time Grammy nominee Denny Knight (Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty) of the Nashville Music Group. Reaching #3 on the Alt-Country Specialty Charts with Road Ready, Jay has radio and PR support for his tour.
Whether backed by a full band or stripped down with just his guitar, his live show feels like a party. You'll laugh and sing and dance and go home feeling that you've made a new friend. Jay can't wait to share a song and a beer with his fans across North America this year!
Hawkshaw Hawkins
Hawk was born April 8, 1963 to Country Music Hall of Fame star Ms. Jean Shepard. Hawk Jr was the second born son of legendary Hawkshaw Hawkins who had the number one hit song in the country “Lonesome 77203” and untimely passed away the same week, just a month before Hawk was born. Hawkshaw died in the fatal crash that killed Patsy Cline and Cowboy Copas.
Born to two very musical people, naturally Hawk found himself following in their footsteps at a young age. Hawk learned to play guitar, and found he not only had a talent for playing, but his rich smooth voice was original and drew a crowd wherever he went. Hawk Jr has appeared on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry both the old Ryman auditorium and the new Opry at Opry Mills, he has done shows with such greats as Bill Anderson, Jack Green, Roy Clark, Charlie Louvin, The Marshall Tucker Band and much more.
Hawk Jr also has also the writer of over 500 songs and has had cuts from artist such as Johnny Lee, Ronnie Mcdowell, Hank Williams Jr, Davis Daniel, Shawn Camp, Ron Williams, and several other acts.
Hawk resides in Hendersonville TN.
Billy Don Burns
Billy Don Burns is the real deal. He’s a no nonsense kind of guy who prefers to let his songs speak for themselves. After all, he’s been making music for more than fifty years and in that time, he’s seen both the ups and downs of the music business and has honestly expressed himself in a decidedly uncompromising way.
It’s little wonder then that his songs have been recorded by the best in the business - a list that includes Willie Nelson, Johnny Paycheck, Tanya Tucker, Mel Tillis, and Sammy Kershaw, to name but a few. And now a new generation has come along and recorded his songs – artists like Cody Jinks, Colter Wall, Whitey Morgan and others.
“I make music because that’s all I’ve ever done,” Billy Don maintains. “It’s all I know. I write because the songs come out of me and I’m privileged to be able to give them life.
Billy Don’s new album, I’ve Seen A Lot of Highway, released on October 6 via Shooter Jennings’ Black Country Rock label, provides an apt summation of both the struggles and successes he’s seen over the course of his career. BDB and his guitar landed in Nashville in 1972. Within a few weeks Harlan Howard had signed him as a writer with Wilderness Music, where he met Lefty Frizzell, Tanya Tucker, Waylon and Tommy Jennings. He was accepted in that crowd with Billy Joe Shaver, Lee Clayton, Billy Ray Reynolds, Steve Young, etc. He scored his first major cut by Connie Smith on Columbia Records in 1974. Over the years Burns became recognized as one of the original outlaws and great writers of country music. His songs pretty much tell his life story.
